Equipment and water

The equipment list for a new car wash in Ghana (and what to skip at first)

Car wash equipment in Ghana with 2026 price ranges for pressure washers, tanks, pumps, hand tools and canopies, and what can wait until later.

The shop at Abossey Okai has four pressure washers on the shelf, from GH₵850 to GH₵6,500, and the trader will tell you the cheap one is "the same thing". It is not the same thing. The cheap one has a plastic pump head that cracks after a few weeks of eight-hour days.

Buying car wash equipment in Ghana is mostly a question of knowing which three or four items must be good, and which ten can be cheap or can wait. This list is in buying order, with 2026 price ranges that vary by shop, brand and the cedi, so treat them as a guide and compare two or three sellers before paying.

Start with water: tank, pump and hoses

Nothing works without stored water. A Poly tank of 5,000 litres is the smallest sensible start, commonly GH₵3,000 to GH₵5,500 depending on the brand, and a wash that expects Saturdays of thirty cars should plan for 10,000 litres as two tanks. Put the tank on a stand, even a low one of concrete blocks, so gravity helps the pump.

A surface pump or submersible pump at GH₵1,200 to GH₵3,000 gives the pressure washers a steady feed and lets you fill buckets fast. Add 30 to 50 metres of good hose, brass fittings rather than plastic, a ball valve at the tank, and a simple sediment filter so the tanker's grit does not go through the pressure washer pump. The hose and fittings together are commonly GH₵500 to GH₵1,200, and buying the cheap hose means buying it twice before Christmas.

The pressure washer: the one tool not to cheap out on

This is where the money should go. A unit that will survive daily commercial use, with a brass or metal pump head and spares you can actually get, is commonly GH₵2,500 to GH₵7,000 in 2026. Petrol-driven units sit at the upper end and above, and they keep working through dumsor, which matters more in some towns than others. Electric units are quieter and cheaper to run but need the ECG meter to be reliable or a generator behind them.

Buy one good one to open, and a second as soon as Saturdays stretch past twenty cars, because one washer waiting for the lance is the most common bottleneck at a small wash. Ask the seller whether anyone in town repairs that brand. The detail on pressure and flow figures, and the units that die in months, is in choosing a pressure washer for a Ghanaian car wash.

Hand tools: buckets, mitts, towels and brushes

Two buckets per washer, so that the rinse water and the soap water are separate and grit does not go back onto the paint. Grit guards in the bottom if you can find them. Microfibre wash mitts rather than the bath sponges that scratch, and plenty of them. Microfibre drying towels, at least two per car in use and twice that in the wash, because a wet towel dries nothing. Tyre brushes with stiff bristles, a soft brush for wheels, a long-handled brush for trotro and pickup roofs, and a set of small detailing brushes for vents and badges.

A decent set of all of this for a four-washer bay is commonly GH₵800 to GH₵1,500, and towels are the item that walks away and wears out fastest, so budget to replace them. A first stock of chemicals, a 20-litre drum of pH-neutral shampoo, a degreaser, a tyre shine and a glass cleaner, adds GH₵600 to GH₵1,200. Which ones to buy and which to avoid is in car wash chemicals: shampoo, degreaser, tyre shine and what to avoid.

Shade, seating and the small things customers notice

A canopy keeps washers working through the midday sun and keeps the car from drying with water spots before it is wiped. Bamboo poles and tarpaulin can be done for GH₵800 to GH₵2,500 and last a year or two. A welded steel frame with roofing sheets is GH₵4,000 to GH₵12,000 and lasts for years, but it can wait until the site has proven itself.

For the customers: plastic chairs or a bench, a cooler of sachet water, a fan if there is power, and a bin. A lockable cash box, a receipt book, a notebook for the day's cars, and a laminated price list on the post where every driver sees it. Gumboots and gloves for the washers, and a first aid box, which the Assembly's inspector sometimes asks about.

What can wait: vacuum, foam cannon, polisher and generator

A wet and dry vacuum, GH₵1,500 to GH₵4,000, is the first upgrade once customers start asking for interiors, which they will. A foam cannon on the pressure washer looks impressive and saves some shampoo but changes little in the result; buy it when you can afford to. A polishing machine and the pads and compounds that go with it only earn money once someone on the team knows how to use it without burning the paint. A small generator at GH₵3,000 to GH₵8,000 matters a great deal in a town with daily cuts and not at all on a site with a petrol pressure washer and a gravity tank.

A shopping order for car wash equipment in Ghana

Buy in this order and stop when the money stops: the tank and stand, the pump and hoses, one good pressure washer, buckets and mitts and towels, the first drum of shampoo and a degreaser, the canopy, the chairs and the cash box. Then open. The second pressure washer, the vacuum and the steel canopy come from the wash's own takings. Before buying anything, put the list against the budget in what it costs to start a car wash in Ghana and see which of the three budgets you are actually working with.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need to start a car wash in Ghana?

The minimum is a water tank of at least 5,000 litres, a pump and hoses, one commercial-grade pressure washer, two buckets per washer, microfibre mitts and drying towels, tyre and wheel brushes, a first stock of shampoo and degreaser, a canopy for shade, and chairs for waiting customers. A vacuum, foam cannon and polisher can be added later from takings.

How much is car wash equipment in Ghana?

A basic set for a manual wash, including a 5,000-litre tank, pump, hoses, one good pressure washer, hand tools, first chemicals and a bamboo canopy, commonly comes to GH₵10,000 to GH₵18,000 in 2026. A steel canopy, second pressure washer, vacuum and generator can add another GH₵10,000 to GH₵25,000. Prices vary by shop, brand and exchange rate.

Where can I buy car wash equipment in Ghana?

In Accra, the hardware and spare-parts shops around Abossey Okai, Kaneshie and Spintex stock pressure washers, pumps, hoses and tanks, and Kejetia and Suame in Kumasi serve the same role. Poly tanks are sold directly by the manufacturers depots and by hardware dealers in most towns. Compare at least three sellers and ask each where spares and repairs can be had.
