Getting your car wash found on Google Maps and Search

How to show up when a driver types car wash near me in Ghana: a Google Business Profile, real photos, honest hours, a Ghana Post GPS address and reviews.

By CarWash Buddy · · 6 min read

An owner in Madina asked why a wash that opened a year after his shows up first when he types car wash near me into his phone, while his own place does not appear at all. He has the better site, more washers and a borehole. The newer wash has a Google Business Profile with photos, and he does not.

That is most of the story. When a driver in Ghana searches "car wash near me", Google shows a map with three or four listings, then the rest. Being on that map does not need a website or an advertising budget. It needs a free listing that you set up properly once and look after for ten minutes a month.

Google changes its screens and verification steps now and then, so if a button is not where this says, look for the same words nearby.

Why "car wash near me" is the search that matters

People rarely search for a car wash by name. They search for one close to where they are, usually while sitting in the car. Google answers with the listings that are nearest, open, well reviewed and complete. A wash with no listing is not in the running, however good the work at the bay.

The search also happens at the moments you care about: Friday evening before a funeral trip, the first dusty week of Harmattan, a Monday morning when a Bolt driver wants a quick interior before shifts. For the other ways to be found by those drivers, see Car wash marketing ideas that actually work in Ghana.

Setting up the Google Business Profile step by step

Open Google Maps on your phone, search for your wash's exact location, and check whether a listing already exists. Customers sometimes add a place themselves, and you may find your wash already there with a wrong name or no hours. If it exists, choose the option to claim or manage it. If not, use "Add your business" and fill in the form.

Use the name on your signboard, nothing more. Adding "best car wash in Accra" to the name is against Google's rules and can get the listing suspended. Pick "Car wash" as the main category; add "Car detailing service" as a second category only if you really offer it.

Drop the map pin on the actual entrance, not the middle of the plot. Then verify. Google may offer a phone call, an SMS, a video walk-through of the premises, or a postcard; the options vary by location and change over time. The video route, where you film the signboard, the bay and the equipment, is often the quickest in Ghana.

Photos, hours and the service list

Photos do more work than anything else on the listing. Take them yourself at the bay: the entrance from the road, the canopy and waiting chairs, a washer drying a saloon, a before and after of a muddy SUV. Ten honest photos beat two glossy ones. Add one new photo a month so the listing looks alive.

Set the hours you actually keep, including Sunday. If you open at 7 am on Saturdays and close at 8 pm in Harmattan, say so. Google shows "closed" to anyone who searches outside your stated hours, and a driver who arrives to find a locked gate leaves a one-star review.

In the services section, list what you offer with prices as ranges where they vary by vehicle: body wash, full wash, interior, engine wash, tyre shine. Add "accepts mobile money" in the attributes if that option is available to you; many drivers look for it.

Your Ghana Post GPS address and the map pin

Ghana Post GPS digital addresses (the GA-, GK-, AK- style codes) are useful on the listing and on your signboard, because a customer can enter the code into the GhanaPostGPS app and get directions to within a few metres. Put the code in the description and in the address field if Google accepts it; Google's address format does not always match the digital address, so a landmark description ("opposite the filling station, 100m before the junction") in the business description helps too.

Check the pin once a quarter by searching your wash from a different phone and asking it for directions, because pins drift when someone suggests an edit.

Asking for reviews and answering every one

Reviews move the listing up the map and persuade the undecided. Ask at the right moment: when a customer collects the keys and the car looks good. Never pay for reviews or ask staff to write them from their own phones; Google removes them and can suspend the listing.

Reply to every review within a day or two, including the bad ones. A calm reply to a complaint about a scratch ("We are sorry about this. Please call the number on our page so we can look at the car with you") shows the next reader how you handle problems. The way to avoid those reviews in the first place is covered in Keeping customers happy at the wash.

Keeping the listing alive month to month

Once a month, open the profile and do four things: add a photo, check that the hours are still right, reply to any new reviews, and look at the insights screen to see how many people asked for directions or called. That last number is the one to watch over a year; it tells you whether the listing is bringing cars. Your next step is to pick up your phone at the bay, search for your own wash, and see what a stranger sees. If there is nothing there, the setup above takes under an hour, and verification usually follows within days.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile free for a car wash in Ghana?

Yes. Creating and verifying the listing costs nothing, and there is no obligation to buy advertising. You need a Google account and a phone with Maps. The only cost is your time: about an hour to set up, then ten minutes a month to keep photos, hours and reviews current.

Why does my car wash not show up on Google Maps?

The usual reasons are that there is no listing, the listing exists but was never verified, the pin sits in the wrong place, or the hours are set so that Google shows you as closed. Search your wash from another phone and check each of those. A listing with no photos and no reviews also tends to sit below ones that have them.

Can I get a Ghana Post GPS address for my car wash?

Yes. The GhanaPostGPS app generates a digital address code for any location in Ghana, and you can generate one while standing at your gate. Put the code on your signboard and in the Google listing description. Confirm the current process in the app itself, since the registration steps have changed over the years.
