Where the money goes in a car wash: a realistic monthly profit and loss

A worked monthly profit and loss for a small Ghanaian wash, showing where car wash profit in Ghana actually comes from and what eats it.

It is the last day of the month at a wash near Community 18 in Tema. The owner has GH₵3,400 in a drawer, a MoMo balance she has not reconciled, and a feeling that the month was good because the bays were full every Saturday. Then the landlord sends a reminder, the tanker driver wants his money, and the washers line up for their share. By Monday the drawer holds GH₵600, and she cannot say where the rest went.

Car wash profit in Ghana is not mysterious. It is just that most owners only ever see the top line and the leftover, never the middle. This post builds the middle for a typical small wash, line by line, so you can see which numbers actually move the leftover.

The figures are plausible for 2026 and they vary by town and site. Replace them with your own.

The wash we are modelling

Picture Kwame's Sparkle Wash: a single site on a side road off the Spintex corridor, two bays under a canopy, one pressure washer, a vacuum, a 5,000 litre Poly tank filled by tanker, five washers on commission and one cashier who also manages. It is open six and a half days a week.

It averages 25 cars a day across the week. Saturdays run to 45, Mondays sink to 12. The mix is mostly saloons with a few SUVs and the odd Urvan, and the average ticket after add-ons is about GH₵40. That gives roughly 650 cars a month and takings of about GH₵26,000.

That is the number the owner feels. Now the rest.

Revenue, honestly counted

GH₵26,000 assumes every car is recorded and every cedi reaches the drawer or the MoMo account. At most washes without a record per car, 5 to 10 percent leaks: cars washed "for a brother", MoMo payments that never came, a washer who takes cash directly on a busy afternoon. Call it GH₵1,500 lost before any cost is paid.

The mix matters too. If the owner could shift 50 of those monthly washes from body wash to full wash, at GH₵25 extra each, that is GH₵1,250 for almost no extra fixed cost. Upselling and recording are the two cheapest ways to move this line.

The monthly cost lines

Rent on a site like this on the Spintex side roads is commonly GH₵1,500 to GH₵4,000 a month, often paid a year or two in advance. Use GH₵2,500 and remember the advance is cash you had to find up front; see What it costs to start a car wash in Ghana in 2026 for how that affects the early months.

Water: 650 cars at around 120 litres each is about 78,000 litres. By tanker at roughly GH₵250 per 10,000 litres that is around GH₵2,000, with wide variation in the dry season and in the north. A wash with a borehole swaps most of that for pump electricity and a maintenance fund.

Labour: five washers on 40 percent of the wash price earn about GH₵10,400 between them. The cashier-manager at GH₵1,200 to GH₵2,000 a month brings labour to roughly GH₵12,000. This is the biggest line, and the commission model means it rises and falls with revenue, which protects the owner in a quiet month and caps the upside in a busy one.

Chemicals: shampoo, tyre shine, degreaser, glass cleaner and dashboard spray bought in drums come to about GH₵2 to GH₵3 per car, so GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,000. Buying by the sachet or small bottle can double this.

Electricity on an ECG prepaid meter for the pressure washer, vacuum, lights and a fan runs perhaps GH₵400 to GH₵800. Add fuel for a generator during dumsor as a separate line, because it can spike.

Then the lines owners forget. The Assembly business operating permit, spread monthly, might be GH₵30 to GH₵80. Towels and mitts wear out: GH₵150 a month. Pressure washer servicing, hose replacement and a nozzle or two: GH₵200. Airtime, printing receipt books, a bit of marketing: GH₵200. Confirm the permit fee with your Assembly, since it varies by district and category.

What car wash profit is left, and what moves it

Add it up: rent GH₵2,500, water GH₵2,000, labour GH₵12,000, chemicals GH₵1,800, electricity GH₵600, permit and sundries GH₵700. That is about GH₵19,600 against takings of GH₵26,000, leaving roughly GH₵6,400 before tax and before the owner pays herself anything.

Now the sensitivities. Drop daily cars from 25 to 20 (a wet month, or a competitor opening) and revenue falls to about GH₵20,800. Labour falls with it, but rent, water storage, permit and sundries do not, and the leftover shrinks to around GH₵3,000. Raise the average ticket by GH₵5 through better upselling and the leftover climbs by over GH₵3,000 a month with almost no extra cost. Cut water use per car by a third through a trigger nozzle and a two-bucket method and you save around GH₵650. The owner's attention belongs, in order, on car count, average ticket and leakage, then on costs.

Keeping the cost lines tight without hurting the wash is its own subject; Cutting car wash costs without cutting corners covers it.

Running the same sheet every month

Write these ten lines on one page and fill them in on the first of every month: cars, average ticket, takings, then each cost, then the leftover. After three months you will see the pattern that the drawer never showed you: which months are tight, whether labour is really 45 percent of takings or has crept to 55, and whether that GH₵6,400 is real or a story.

If a bank or a susu group ever asks for your numbers, this one page is also the heart of the plan in A car wash business plan for Ghana that a bank will actually read. Start the sheet this month, even if the first version is rough.

Frequently asked questions

How much profit does a car wash make in Ghana?

A small wash doing around 25 cars a day at an average of GH₵40 might take about GH₵26,000 a month and keep GH₵4,000 to GH₵8,000 after rent, water, commission, chemicals, electricity and permits, before tax and the owner s own pay. It varies widely with location, water source and how many cars go unrecorded. Busier sites with higher tickets do better; quiet or wet months can wipe the margin out.

What is the biggest cost in running a car wash?

Labour, almost always. Washers on commission commonly take 35 to 50 percent of the wash price, which at a busy site is the largest single line by far. Water comes next where tanker supply is used, then rent. Chemicals and electricity are smaller than most owners expect once products are bought in drums and diluted correctly.

How many cars a day does a car wash need to break even?

It depends on fixed costs. In the example above, with rent, water storage, permit and a manager costing around GH₵5,000 a month and each wash contributing roughly GH₵18 after commission, water and chemicals, the wash covers its fixed costs at about 280 cars a month, or roughly 10 to 11 a day. Everything above that is margin, which is why Saturdays matter so much.
