Adding detailing services to your car wash: interior, engine, polish and more

Car detailing Ghana car washes can add profitably: interior deep cleans, engine washes, polishing and headlights, with prices, time per car and training.

Last month a regular at a wash in Dansoman paid GH₵40 for a full wash, collected the keys, and drove to Osu to pay somebody else GH₵350 for an interior deep clean and a polish. The owner only found out because the washer saw the car the following week with the seats shampooed and the headlights clear. That GH₵350 could have stayed in Dansoman.

Car detailing Ghana style is not a separate business with a showroom. For most washes it is three or four extra services, a trained washer, a couple of products, and the sense to know which jobs to turn down. Done well it lifts the average ticket for the cars you already have without adding a single new customer.

What counts as car detailing at a Ghanaian wash

Detailing means cleaning and restoring a car to a higher standard than a wash: shampooing seats and carpets, cleaning dashboards and vents, degreasing the engine bay, machine polishing paint, restoring cloudy headlights, treating leather, and protecting paint with wax or a sealant.

The services that fit a working wash are the ones that take 30 minutes to 3 hours, use products you can buy in Accra or Kumasi, and can be done under your canopy while the body wash continues around them. Those are the ones below.

Which services to add first

Start with the interior deep clean. Harmattan dust in vents, trotro-stop sand in carpets, spilled drinks in seats, and children in the back of SUVs make this the most demanded service at any wash. It needs a wet and dry vacuum, a soft brush set, an interior cleaner, a fabric shampoo and clean microfibre towels.

Add the engine wash next, if you are not already doing it. It is quick and customers of older vehicles ask for it before selling. Then headlight restoration: cloudy yellow headlights on cars that have spent years in Ghanaian sun respond to sanding and polishing in under an hour and the result is dramatic. Machine polishing to remove swirl marks and light scratches comes last, because it needs the most training and the most expensive tool, and done badly it burns paint.

What to charge and how long each takes

Price detailing by the hour it takes plus product, then round to the notes people carry. As a guide for 2026, and it varies by city and vehicle: an interior deep clean on a saloon commonly runs GH₵120 to GH₵250 and takes one to two hours; an SUV is more. An engine wash is often GH₵40 to GH₵80 and 20 to 30 minutes. Headlight restoration for a pair sits around GH₵80 to GH₵200 and takes 45 to 90 minutes. A machine polish on a saloon can be GH₵250 to GH₵600 or more and takes three to five hours, which is why it is usually a booked job rather than a walk-in.

Keep each detailing service on its own line on the price board, with a time next to it. The method for building the matrix by vehicle type, and for raising prices without a fight, is in How to price car wash services by vehicle type.

Training a washer to detail

Choose your most careful washer, not your fastest. Detailing rewards patience: working one seat at a time, testing a product on a hidden patch, drying thoroughly before the customer returns. Start them on your own car.

Teach the order: dry vacuum first, then brushes in the vents and seams, then fabric shampoo worked in sections and extracted, then plastics and glass, then mats last. Engine washes need the battery terminals, alternator and fuse box covered and low pressure only. For headlights, practise on a scrap lens from a mechanic before touching a customer's car. Machine polishing deserves a few days with someone who already does it; a burnt edge on a bonnet costs more than the training.

Most of the habits start in the washer's first week, and the basics of chemicals and safety are in Training a new car washer in one week.

When to say no

A good detailer turns down jobs. Say no to paint correction on a car with peeling clear coat; polishing it makes it worse and the customer blames you. Say no to mould and water damage in a car that was flooded at Kaneshie, which needs stripping, not shampooing. Say no to a polish on Saturday morning when the queue is twenty cars deep and your detailer is also a washer.

Write the time next to each job and refuse to start one you cannot finish before closing. A customer who returns at 6 pm to a half-shampooed seat is not a customer any more.

Keeping detailing in the same notebook as body washes is where many owners lose track of which washer did what and what each service earned. If you would rather not run it from a notebook, CarWash Buddy lets you add detailing as priced services at check-in, assign the washer, and see what each service brought in that day. The first month is free.

Upselling without pestering

Nobody wants a sales pitch at a car wash. What works is showing, not telling. When the washer opens the door and sees a sandy carpet, a one-line observation to the customer ("the carpets have a lot of Harmattan sand; we do a full interior for GH₵150 if you ever want it") is enough. A before and after of a headlight job on WhatsApp status brings more polish bookings than any speech.

Never push twice. If the answer is no, wash the car well and let the result of the next customer's interior speak. Your next step is to buy a wet and dry vacuum and a fabric shampoo this week, pick your most careful washer, and do your own car first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does car detailing cost in Ghana?

It varies by city, vehicle and the shop. In 2026 an interior deep clean on a saloon commonly costs GH₵120 to GH₵250, an engine wash GH₵40 to GH₵80, headlight restoration GH₵80 to GH₵200 for a pair, and a machine polish GH₵250 to GH₵600 or more. SUVs and luxury vehicles cost more, and full paint correction with coatings is priced separately.

What is the difference between a car wash and car detailing?

A wash removes dirt from the outside and vacuums the inside in under an hour. Detailing restores the car to a higher standard: shampooed seats and carpets, degreased engine bays, polished paint, restored headlights and protected surfaces. Detailing jobs take one to five hours per car and need trained staff and specific products.

What equipment do I need to start detailing at my car wash?

Begin with a wet and dry vacuum, a set of soft detailing brushes, interior and fabric cleaners, plenty of clean microfibre towels, an engine degreaser, and headlight sanding and polishing supplies. A dual-action polisher and compounds come later, once a washer has been trained, because machine polishing done badly damages paint.
