How to price car wash services by vehicle type

A practical method for car wash pricing in Ghana: work out your cost per wash, build a price matrix by vehicle type and service, and know when to raise.

"My neighbour charges GH₵30, so I charge GH₵30. Is that wrong?" An owner in Tema asked me that last year, and the honest answer was: it depends on what the GH₵30 costs you. He had never worked it out. When we did, his SUV wash was earning him GH₵6 after water, chemicals and the washer's share. Car wash pricing in Ghana is usually done by looking sideways at the competition. That tells you what customers are used to paying, which matters. It tells you nothing about whether you can afford to charge it. This post walks through the other half: what each wash costs, how to turn that into a price list by vehicle type, and when the list needs to change.

Start with what one wash costs you

Pick a saloon body wash and count everything that goes into it. Water first: a manual bucket wash uses perhaps 60 to 120 litres, a pressure washer wash with a long rinse can use 150 litres or more. If you buy tanker water at, say, GH₵250 for a 10,000 litre load, that is roughly GH₵2 to GH₵4 of water per car. On GWCL commercial billing it may be less; on a borehole it is mostly the pump's electricity or fuel. The figures in "Water supply for car washes in Ghana will help you put a number on your own supply.

Chemicals next. Shampoo bought in a 20 litre drum and diluted properly comes to well under GH₵2 a car. Tyre shine, glass cleaner and dashboard spray add a little more if you include them. Then labour: if your washers take 40 percent of the price or a fixed GH₵10 per saloon, write that down. Finally the slice of fixed costs: rent, the Assembly permit, ECG, the manager's pay, towel replacement. Divide last month's fixed costs by last month's car count and you have a per-car figure, often GH₵8 to GH₵15 at a small wash.

Add it up. At many washes a saloon body wash costs GH₵18 to GH₵28 before any profit. If your price is GH₵30, you now know your margin, and it is thinner than it feels on a busy Saturday.

The car wash pricing matrix: vehicle down the side, service across the top

Draw a grid. Down the left: motorbike, saloon, SUV or crossover, pickup, large SUV (Prado, Land Cruiser), trotro or Urvan, truck. Across the top: body wash, full wash, interior only, engine wash, polish. Fill in the body wash column first using your cost figure plus the margin you need, then check it against the market ranges in Car wash prices in Ghana in 2026.

Each step up in vehicle size should add real money, not a token GH₵5. An SUV takes more water, more shampoo and five to ten more minutes of a washer's time than a saloon. A Land Cruiser takes more again. A common pattern is saloon, then plus GH₵10 to GH₵15 for SUV and pickup, then plus another GH₵10 to GH₵20 for large SUVs, then trotros and trucks priced individually.

For the service columns, full wash is usually 1.5 to 2 times body wash; interior only sits around 60 to 80 percent of a body wash because it is slow work; engine wash carries a premium because of the degreaser and the skill. Keep the grid to no more than seven rows and five columns. If a customer needs a calculator to read your board, it is too complicated.

Round to the notes people carry

Nobody wants to be handed GH₵3 in coins. Price in multiples of GH₵5, and prefer numbers that a customer can pay with one or two notes: GH₵30, GH₵50, GH₵70, GH₵100. A saloon at GH₵35 and an SUV at GH₵45 means endless change problems at the cashier's table; GH₵30 and GH₵50 means the customer hands over a note and leaves.

Rounding also helps MoMo. A customer paying GH₵50 by MTN MoMo types one number; GH₵47 invites errors and "I sent it, check your phone" arguments.

The two numbers that tell you when to raise

Prices should move when costs move, not when you feel like it. Two numbers give the signal. The first is your cost per wash, which you should recalculate whenever tanker water, shampoo or washer pay changes. If cost per saloon has crept from GH₵20 to GH₵26 and your price is still GH₵30, you have lost most of your margin without noticing.

The second is your queue. If cars are waiting 40 minutes on Saturdays and you are turning people away, your price is below what the market will bear. A GH₵5 rise will lose a few price shoppers and keep everyone else, and you will earn more from fewer cars.

If you would rather not rebuild these figures from a notebook each time, CarWash Buddy keeps prices per vehicle type, records each car as it is checked in and shows takings by service and by washer, so you can see which rows of the matrix actually earn. The first month is free.

Put the board up and defend it

A price list only works if it is visible before the wash starts. Paint it on a board at the entrance, in large letters, with the vehicle categories named plainly ("SUV and pickup", not "Category B"). Give the cashier and the washers the same list. When a customer with a Prado insists it is "just a small car", the board settles it.

Review the matrix twice a year, usually in October before Harmattan and again after Easter. Change one column at a time, tell regulars a week ahead, and keep the old board in the store room in case you need to remember what you charged.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the cost of one car wash?

Add the water used (litres times your cost per litre), the diluted chemicals, the washer s share of the price, and a slice of fixed costs found by dividing last month s rent, permit, electricity and wages by last month s car count. At a small Ghanaian wash this often lands at GH₵18 to GH₵28 for a saloon body wash, though it varies with water source and location.

How much more should I charge for an SUV than a saloon?

Most washes add GH₵10 to GH₵15 for an SUV or pickup and a further GH₵10 to GH₵20 for a large SUV such as a Prado or Land Cruiser. The larger vehicle uses more water and shampoo and takes a washer five to fifteen minutes longer, so a token GH₵5 difference usually means the SUV is being washed at a loss.

When should a car wash raise its prices?

Raise when your cost per wash has risen enough to eat the margin, or when the Saturday queue is so long you are turning cars away. Move in GH₵5 steps, change one service at a time, put the new board up a week before and tell regulars in person. Twice a year, before Harmattan and after Easter, is a sensible rhythm for a review.
