Starting a car wash

Opening a car wash in Kumasi: what is different from Accra

What opening a car wash in Kumasi involves: Suame, Adum, Ahodwo and the Tanoso corridor, the KMA permit, water, prices and the competition.

A body wash on a saloon that fetches GH₵40 at East Legon fetches GH₵25 at Ahodwo, and the customer at Ahodwo will still ask for "reduce small". That one fact explains most of what is different about running a car wash in Kumasi: the money per car is lower, the cars are more and the drivers are more loyal to the wash that treats them well.

People who have run a wash in Accra come to Kumasi expecting the same business with cheaper rent. The rent is cheaper. The rest is its own thing: the corridors, the KMA sub-metros, the water, what customers expect and how many washes are already on the road.

Where the cars are: Suame, Adum, Ahodwo and Tanoso

Suame Magazine is the largest vehicle repair area in the country, and a wash near it washes cars straight out of the mechanic's bay, which means grease, filings and customers who want the engine bay done. It is volume work at low prices with a lot of pickups and trotros. Adum and the Kejetia end are commercial: shop owners and traders who want a quick wash while they are at the shop, and parking is the constraint, not customers.

Ahodwo, Nhyiaeso and the Southern Bypass are where the private SUVs and the better-paying customers are, and where a wash can sell interiors and polish. The Tanoso corridor on the Sunyani road, and the Abuakwa side, serve commuters and estate residents heading in and out of town, with plots still affordable and traffic growing every year. Pick the corridor for the customer you want, then walk it and count cars at three times of day; the method is in choosing a car wash location in Accra.

The KMA permit and the sub-metros

Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly issues the business operating permit, but day to day you will deal with the sub-metro office for your area, and the sub-metro revenue officers are the ones who walk the roads. Some areas that feel like Kumasi, Abuakwa for instance, fall under a different municipal assembly, with its own office and its own fee schedule, so check which Assembly your plot actually sits in before you go.

The sequence is the same as anywhere: ORC first, then GRA for the TIN, then EPA clearance at the Ashanti regional office, then the Assembly. Fees differ by Assembly and by the category the officer places you in, and they change yearly, so confirm at the counter. Carry the tenancy agreement, because KMA officers frequently ask who owns the plot.

Water in Kumasi: Barekese, boreholes and the red earth

GWCL supply from Barekese reaches much of the city, but with the same rationing and pressure problems as Accra, and many washes rely on tankers or a borehole. Tanker prices are commonly GH₵200 to GH₵450 a load in 2026, a little below Accra, and vary with distance and season. The water table across much of Kumasi is reachable, so boreholes are common and often cheaper to drill than in parts of Accra, though depth and rock still decide the bill.

The red laterite soil is the other difference. In the rainy months, which in the Ashanti region run roughly from April to July and again from September into November, every car arrives with red mud under the arches and on the sills. That is more water per car and a real market for underbody washes, so plan the storage and the drainage for it. A wash on bare laterite without a concrete bay becomes a swamp by May.

What a car wash in Kumasi can charge

Prices sit below Accra across the board. A saloon body wash is commonly GH₵20 to GH₵35 in 2026, an SUV GH₵30 to GH₵50, and a full wash with interior GH₵40 to GH₵80 depending on the area, with Ahodwo and Nhyiaeso at the top and Suame and Atonsu at the bottom. Trotros and pickups are a bigger share of the work than in Accra and pay by the size of the vehicle. Engine washes sell well near Suame.

Expect to be bargained with, and post the prices on a board anyway. A posted price is the washer's protection and yours. The wider price picture is in car wash prices in Ghana, and the volume end of the market, motorbikes and tricycles, is bigger in Kumasi than in Accra and worth a corner of the bay.

Competition and what Kumasi customers expect

There are already washes on every corridor named above, some for twenty years, and the customers know them. The way in is not price. It is being open at seven, having a shaded place to sit with a fan, washing the wheels without being asked, drying the car so there are no water spots, and remembering the driver's name. Kumasi customers are loyal, and once a driver has brought his brother and his pastor, he does not leave for GH₵5.

The other expectation is a short wait. A wash at Adum that keeps a shop owner forty minutes loses him to the one that takes twenty. And on a Saturday before a funeral, which in the Ashanti region is most Saturdays, be ready for a run on black and dark cars from six in the morning.

Opening week on a Kumasi corridor

Open on a Thursday, quietly, with the trotro drivers from the nearest station and whoever stops. Fix the drainage and the towel count before Saturday. Then put the banner at the junction, tell the drivers' union at the station, and give every first-time customer a card with the WhatsApp number. Within a month you will know whether the corridor was right, and the water bill will tell you whether a borehole comes next; the costs of each option are in water supply for car washes in Ghana.
