Starting a mobile car wash in Ghana: washing at homes, offices and car parks

How to start a mobile car wash in Ghana, from the kit in a boot or tricycle and carrying water to pricing, estates, office parks and gated community rules.

No rent advance. No landlord. No tanker driver who does not come. A mobile car wash in Ghana starts with a kit in a car boot or on a Pragya tricycle, a phone with WhatsApp, and ten customers who would rather be washed in the driveway on Sunday than queue on Saturday.

It is the cheapest way into the business, and it has its own problems, mostly to do with water, estate security and pricing. This post covers the kit, the water, where the customers are, what to charge and the paperwork that still applies without a plot.

What fits in a boot, a Pragya or a tricycle

A working mobile kit is lighter than most people expect. A small electric pressure washer that runs from a household socket, commonly GH₵1,500 to GH₵4,000 in 2026. Two 25-litre jerrycans, or a 100 to 200-litre tank on the tricycle. Two buckets, mitts, a set of microfibre drying towels, tyre and wheel brushes, a cordless or 12-volt vacuum, and a bag of chemicals: shampoo, degreaser, tyre shine, glass cleaner and an interior cleaner.

In a saloon boot that is already full. A Pragya or a cargo tricycle carries the tank, a small generator and a second person, and it is the vehicle most mobile washers in Kumasi and Tamale use. Start with what you have.

Carrying water, and when to go waterless

Water is the whole problem. A proper rinse wash needs 80 to 150 litres per car, and you cannot carry that for ten cars. Most mobile washers do one of three things: use the customer's tap, which works in estates with GWCL or a borehole and should be agreed before you start; carry 150 to 200 litres on the tricycle and do four or five cars a round; or use a waterless or rinseless product, which lifts dust with a sprayed solution and a microfibre towel and uses two litres or less per car.

Waterless works well on a car that is dusty rather than muddy, which is most cars in Accra and Kumasi outside the rainy months, and it is the only sensible method in an office car park or an underground garage. It does not work on a pickup that has come back from a site in the rain. The better products cost GH₵150 to GH₵400 for a bottle that does 15 to 25 cars. Keep a jerrycan for wheels and door sills regardless.

Where the customers are: estates, offices and car parks

The gated estates are the first market: Trasacco, Devtraco and Regimanuel developments, the East Legon Hills and Oyarifa estates, Community 25 in Tema, and the newer estates along the Kasoa road. Then office parks and bank head offices on the Ring Road and in Airport City, where staff want the car washed while they work. Then church car parks on Sunday morning, with the pastor's permission.

Every one of these has rules. A gated estate will want you registered with the estate office or the security post, sometimes with a monthly fee or a letter from a resident, and the security men will remember the one time you left a puddle outside a house. Keep the ground dry when you leave and you will be the only washer they let in.

Pricing a mobile car wash in Ghana

A mobile wash charges more than a roadside wash and should. A standard exterior and interior at a home in East Legon is commonly GH₵50 to GH₵100 in 2026, and a fuller clean with the seats and mats done can be GH₵120 to GH₵200. In an office car park, GH₵40 to GH₵70 for a waterless exterior and quick interior is typical. Prices vary with the estate, the car and how far you travel.

Price for the route, not the car. Five cars on one estate street in a morning is a good day. One car in Tema and one in Dansoman is a day spent in traffic. Offer a monthly rate of four washes at a small discount to regulars who want a fixed Sunday slot, and take MoMo as the default so you are not carrying cash through estates after dark.

The paperwork nobody expects

Having no plot does not mean having no permit. Many Assemblies treat a mobile wash as a business operating in their area and may ask for a business operating permit, and an estate or office park will often ask for an ORC certificate before they let you work regularly on their grounds. What exactly is required varies by Assembly, so ask at the revenue office. A TIN and a MoMo merchant account also make corporate customers easier, because facilities managers like a receipt. The sequence of offices is the same as for a fixed wash and is in registering a car wash business in Ghana.

Booking, regulars and the WhatsApp number

A mobile wash lives or dies on the phone. Put the number on the tricycle, on a card left on the dashboard, and in a WhatsApp Business profile with a price list and before-and-after photos. Confirm each booking the evening before, and send a photo when the car is done if the owner is not there. The habits that work for this are in WhatsApp for car washes.

Keep a simple list of plates, addresses, what was done and what was paid. After three months you will know which estates pay and which cars are worth the drive. If the list says one estate gives you fifteen cars every Sunday, that is the place to ask the estate office about a fixed pitch by the gate, and from there the road back to a fixed wash is in how to start a car wash business in Ghana.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a mobile car wash in Ghana?

A boot-based kit with a small pressure washer, jerrycans, buckets, towels, brushes, a portable vacuum and a first stock of chemicals commonly costs GH₵3,000 to GH₵8,000 in 2026. Adding a cargo tricycle with a tank raises the total to GH₵15,000 to GH₵30,000 depending on the tricycle. Prices vary by brand and whether you already own the vehicle.

How much do mobile car washes charge in Ghana?

For a home visit in an Accra estate, an exterior and interior wash is commonly GH₵50 to GH₵100, and a fuller clean can be GH₵120 to GH₵200. In office car parks a waterless exterior with a quick interior is often GH₵40 to GH₵70. Prices vary by city, by estate and by how far the washer travels, and are generally higher than at a roadside wash.

Is a waterless car wash effective in Ghana?

Yes for dust, which is most of what sits on a car in Accra and Kumasi outside the rainy months, and in Harmattan especially. A waterless product sprayed on and wiped off with clean microfibre towels leaves a good finish and uses almost no water. It is not effective on thick mud or a vehicle back from a dirt road, which still needs a rinse wash.
